REVERBERATORY WELDING - A NEW TECHNIQUE
A NEW WELDING TECHNIQUE CALLED "REVERBERATORY WELDING" HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN SOUTH AFRICA. ESSENTIALLY, THIS CONSISTS OF PLACING A HEAT REFLECTIVE MATERIAL OF SOME TYPE ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE WELD JOINT. USE OF A DEEPLY PENETRATING WELDING PROCESS AND REFLECTION OF THE HEAT BACK INTO THE BASE METAL PRODUCES A FLARE AT THE ROOT. THIS RESULTS IN A WELD OF HOURGLASS SHAPE, RATHER THAN THE NUGGET SHAPE COMMON TO ONE-SIDE WELDING. SOME OF THE OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION ARE TO PROVIDE AN IMPROVED BUTTON WELD WHICH CAN BE USED TO REPLACE RIVETS OR PERMANENT BOLTS, TO PROVIDE AN IMPROVED SEAM WELD MADE FROM ONE SIDE ONLY, AND TO AVOID, OR AT LEAST MINIMIZE, SOME OF THE DISADVANTAGES ASSOCIATED WITH USE OF BACKING PLATES, BACK-UP TAPES, FLUX BACK-UP, ETC. THE TECHNIQUE MAY BE USED FOR LOCALIZED WELDING (BUTTON AND PUDDLE), FOR INTERMITTENT LONGITUDINAL WELDING (STITCH), AND FOR CONTINUOUS LONGITUDINAL WELDING (SEAM). /AUTHOR/
