PAINT ADHESION ON A SCRIBED SURFACE: THE 'PASS' TEST
A TEST HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO DETERMINE THE RELATIVE PAINT LOOSENING ALONG A SCRIBE LINE THROUGH A PAINT FILM, AFTER EXPOSURE IN A CORROSIVE ENVIRONMENT. SINCE THE LOOSENING OF PAINT FILMS AT A SCRIBE IS USUALLY CAUSED BY CATHODICALLY FORMED ALKALI, THE TEST SETS UP A CONTINUOUS CATHODIC REACTION TO PROVIDE A MORE DIRECT AND ACCELERATED ALKALI ATTACK THAN THE SALT SPRAY TEST. THE TEST RESULTS AGREE WITH THE KNOWN INFLUENCE OF PREPAINT SURFACE CONDITIONS AND THE DEGREE OF PAINT CURE. CORRELATION WITH SALT SPRAY TEST RESULTS FOR MAJOR CHANGES IN PROCESS VARIABLES WAS FOUND; HOWEVER, THE RELATIONSHIP WAS NOT ESTABLISHED FOR MORE SUBTLE PROCESS DIFFERENCES. THE REPEATABILITY OF SALT SPRAY AND "PASS" TESTS ARE COMPARED, SINCE POOR REPEATABILITY OF EITHER TEST MAY BE THE REASON FOR LACK OF CORRELATION. /JPT/
