APPLICATIONS OF X-RAY EMISSION ANALYSIS IN THE COATING INDUSTRY
X-RAY SPECTROGRAPHIC INSTRUMENTATION HAS BEEN AVAILABLE FOR SOME TIME. ITS USE IN THE PAINT INDUSTRY HAS BEEN SOMEWHAT RESTRICTED DUE TO HIGH INITIAL COST AND LACK OF TRAINED PERSONNEL. THE TECHNIQUE IS APPLICABLE TO THE DETERMINATION OF ALL ELEMENTS ABOVE ATOMIC NUMBER 12 IN THE PERIODIC TABLE. QUALITATIVE PROCEDURES FOR THE OVERALL IDENTIFICATION OF ELEMENTS IN TOTAL PAINT SYSTEMS AND ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED. QUANTITATIVE PROCEDURES FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PIGMENT ELEMENTS IN A TOTAL PAINT, AND DRIER ELEMENTS IN SEPARATED VEHICLES ARE OTHER APPLICATIONS. X-RAY EMISSION ANALYSIS IS NONDESTRUCTIVE AND MAY BE USED ON SOLID, LIQUID, OR POWDERED SAMPLES. /JPT/
