BUBBLES IN SOLIDS

METALS IN CONTACT WITH CERTAIN CORROSIVE MEDIA OFTEN DEVELOP BUBBLES EXTERNALLY. WHEN GASEOUS HYDROGEN AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES AND PRESSURE IS CONTAINED IN VESSELS MADE OF CERTAIN STEELS, THE VESSELS FREQUENTLY FAIL -- OFTEN WITHOUT WARNING. IRRADITION OF NUCLEAR FUEL ELEMENTS ABOVE A CERTAIN TEMPERATURE OFTEN LEADS TO SWELLING OF THE ELEMENT. WHAT THESE THREE PHENOMENA HAVE IN COMMON IS THAT THEY ALL RESULT FROM GROWTH OF GAS BUBBLES IN SOLIDS. AN EXPERT STUDY IS PRESENTED OF PRECISELY WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE SOLIDS WHEN EXPOSED TO SUCH CONDITIONS. THE BASIC MECHANISM OF INERT BUBBLE FORMATION AND GROWTH IS EXPLAINED, ALONG WITH BLISTER AND CRACK FORMATION AND THE IMPINGEMENT OF NEIGHBORING BUBBLES.
