THE REPRODUCIBILITY OF POTENTIOSTATIC AND POTENTIODYNAMIC ANODIC POLARIZATION MEASUREMENTS
A TASK GROUP WAS FORMED UNDER ASTM COMMITTEE G-1 ON CORROSION OF METALS, SUBCOMMITTEE XI ON ELECTRO-CHEMICAL MEASUREMENTS IN CORROSION TESTING, TO PLAN AND TO CONDUCT AN INTERLABORATORY ANODIC POLARIZATION TEST. A PROGRAM WAS DESIGNED TO DETERMINE THE DEGREE OF EXPERIMENTAL REPRODUCIBILITY POSSIBLE WHEN SEVERAL LABORATORIES FOLLOWED A STANDARD PROCEDURE FOR POTENTIOSTATIC AND POTENTIODYNAMIC MEASUREMENTS. TWENTY LABORATORIES PARTICIPATED IN THIS PROGRAM. IT WAS ANTICIPATED THAT THE USE OF STANDARD PROCEDURES WOULD MINIMIZE VARIATIONS IN THE DATA FROM DIFFERENT LABORATORIES AND WITH REASONABLY GOOD AGREEMENT A STANDARD REFERENCE CURVE COULD BE PREPARED FOR A SPECIFIC METAL-ELECTROLYTE SYSTEM FOR EVALUATING CORROSION RESISTANCE. TEST RESULTS DEMONSTRATE THE EXCELLENT REPRODUCIBILITY OF POTENTIOSTATIC ANODIC POLARIZATION CURVES WHEN LABORATORIES FOLLOW A STANDARD EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE. THE STANDARD POTENTIOSTATIC PLOT PROVIDES A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR INVESTIGATORS TO COMPARE THEIR EXPERIMENTAL DATA WITH THOSE OF THE PARTICIPANTS OF THIS PROGRAM. THE FEW OBSERVED VARIATIONS IN POLARIZATION CURVES WERE EXPLAINED BY A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF DATA WHICH DID NOT SHOW AGREEMENT, AND METHODS FOR AVOIDING SUCH VARIATIONS ARE PRESENTED IN THE COMPLETE REPORT.
