RAISED REFLECTIVE MARKERS FOR SAFER NIGHT DRIVING
A HIGHLY EFFICIENT THREE-DIMENSIONAL REFLECTIVE MARKER, EFFICIENT UNDER BOTH WET AND DRY CONDITIONS AT NIGHT, DELINEATES TRAVEL LANES AND OTHER PAVEMENT MARKINGS CLEARLY AND FAR AHEAD. A SECOND MARKER, WHICH IS RAISED, NON-REFLECTIVE, CEMENTED TO THE PAVEMENT BY AN EPOXY ADHESIVE, WAS DESIGNED TO SUPERSEDE THE DAYLIGHT GUIDANCE FUNCTION OF PAINTED LINES AND TO END THE COSTLY PERENNIAL REPAINTING CHORE. BOTH RAISED MARKERS PROVIDE A BRAILLESQUE FUNCTION, A RUMBLE EFFECT THAT WARNS MOTORISTS WHO DRIFT OUT OF THEIR LANE, OR CROSS A CENTERLINE. USE OF THE RAISED MARKERS HAS BEEN CONFINED MOSTLY TO AREAS NOT SUBJECT TO SNOW REMOVAL, ALTHOUGH AN EXCEPTION IS FOUND IN SOME STATES WHICH USE RUBBER-EDGED SNOWPLOW BLADES. A NEW, SNOW-PLOWABLE, RAISED REFLECTIVE MARKER HAS BEEN THOROUGHLY TESTED THROUGH TWO SEVERE WINTERS ON ROADS IN PENNSYLVANIA WITH SUCCESS. CALIFORNIA HAS INSTALLED RAISED MARKERS ON MORE THAN 2,500 LANE-MILES, EXTENDED THE PROGRAM TO PLACING YELLOW MARKERS ON THE BARRIER LINES ON THE LEFT EDGES OF DIVIDED HIGHWAYS AND SET 1971 AS AN UNOFFICIAL TARGET DATE FOR REPLACING ALL PAINTED LANE LINES ON STATE HIGHWAYS WITH THE MARKERS. LEGISLATION IS NOW PENDING BEFORE THE CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY THAT WILL PERMIT THE DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS TO USE EITHER PAINT OR RAISED MARKERS TO DENOTE PASSING AND NO-PASSING SIGNS AND BARRIER MARKINGS. ATTEMPTS ARE BEING MADE TO ESTABLISH STANDARDS. IT IS HOPED THAT THERE WILL BE AN ALL-PURPOSE MARKER, ONE THAT WILL BE EQUALLY EFFECTIVE BOTH NIGHT AND DAY. SPACINGS WILL PROBABLY BE CHANGED, TAILORED TO THE TYPE OF ROAD AND THE VOLUME AND SPEED OF TRAFFIC. TEXAS HAS FOUND RED REFLECTIVE PAVEMENT ARROWS SO SUCCESSFUL AT FREEWAY EXITS, AND ARE IMPRESSED WITH THE USE OF BLUE 88 MARKERS TO DELINEATE EXITS, THEY ARE INSTALLING A NEW MODEL OF THE 88 TO PROVIDE DISTINCTIVE DELINEATION FOR THE EXITS AND TO GIVE A GREATER WARNING TO WRONG-WAY MOTORISTS. THE NEW 88, IS BI-DIRECTIONAL, BLUE AND RED. INITIAL COSTS OF THE RAISED MARKERS ARE GREATER THAN A PAINTED, REFLECTORIZED LINE, HOWEVER THE AVERAGE ANNUAL COST IS FAR LESS.
