DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCRATCH GAGE
THE OPERATION OF SCRATCH GAGES WORK UNDER WATER, OUT IN THE OPEN, UP TO 1000 DEGREES F., IS EXPLAINED. TARGETS ARE LEGIBLE EVEN AFTER A FIRE. INDIVIDUAL STRAINS ARE SEPARATED ON THE TARGET BECAUSE OF A SMALL FORCE WHICH COMES FROM THE STRUCTURE TO WHICH THE GAGE IS ATTACHED. STRAINS ARE ONLY SEPARATED WHEN THEY EXCEED THE THRESHOLD OF SENSITIVITY OF THE GAGE DIVIDED BY THE GAGE LENGTH. THIS MINIATURIZES ONLY THE IMPORTANT STRAINS ON THE METAL TARGET. THE TINY SHARP SCRATCHES ON THE TARGET CAN BE VIEWED WITH A CALIBRATED EYEPIECE SCALE IN A BENCH MICROSCOPE, BY ENLARGED PHOTOGRAPHS, OR BY OPTICAL SCANNING DEVICES. THIS PAPER ALSO DISCUSSES THE CIRCULAR X-Y RECORDING SCRATCH STRAIN GAGE. IT COVERS ACCURACY, ENVIRONMENTAL TESTS, AND APPLICATIONS OF MEASURING STRAINS IN BRIDGES, LANDING GEARS AND HELICOPTER ROTOR BLADES. /AUTHOR/
