A HAND-HELD DYNAMIC STRAIN GAUGE

TO ENABLE QUICK AND COMPREHENSIVE SURVEYS TO BE MADE OF DYNAMIC STRAINS IN VIBRATING SURFACES, A PORTABLE HAND-HELD GAUGE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. THE DEVICE CONSISTS OF A STRIP OF PIEZOELECTRIC CERAMIC 0.44 IN LONG, AT THE ENDS OF WHICH TWO GRAMOPHONE SAPPHIRE STYLI ARE CEMENTED, 0.375 IN APART. THE ELEMENT IS ENCLOSED IN AN OUTER CASING WITH THE PROBES PROJECTING THROUGH A DIAPHRAGM ON THE FRONT SURFACE, WHICH IS PRESSED INTO CONTACT WITH THE VIBRATING PLATE. THE DYNAMIC STRAIN IN THE PLATE CAN THEN BE MEASURED ON A VALVE VOLTMETER. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS INDICATE THAT THE GAUGE MEASURES CORRECTLY, WITH AN ACCURACY TO BETTER THAN 10%, FOR FREQUENCIES UP TO 500 HZ, AND MEASUREMENTS ON THE WALLS OF A POWER TRANSFORMER INDICATE THAT THE DEVICE MEASURES STRAIN EVEN AT THE POSITIONS OF LARGE OVERALL VIBRATION. /AUTHOR/
