VIBRATING-WIRE LOAD CELL FOR LONG-TERM TESTS
AMOUNT OF LOAD CARRIED IN DIRECT BEARING AT BASE OF PILE CAN BE MEASURED OVER LONG PERIODS USING A LOAD CELL. THE MANNER IN WHICH THE LOAD APPLIED TO A PILE IS CARRIED IN SKIN FRICTION ON ITS SIDES AND IN END-BEARING CAN BEST BE DETERMINED USING A LOAD CELL PLACED EITHER AT THE BASE OF A STRAIGHT-SHAFTED PILE OR JUST ABOVE THE EXPANDED BASE OF AN UNDER-REAMED PILE. THE PAPER DESCRIBES A LOAD CELL WHICH WAS CONSTRUCTED FOR USE IN A RESEARCH PROJECT UNDERTAKEN ON BORED PILES. THE VIBRATING-WIRE TYPE OF GAGE WAS SELECTED BECAUSE OF ITS LONG TERM STABILITY AND THE EASE WITH WHICH THE MEASURING EQUIPMENT CAN BE DISCONNECTED AND RECONNECTED WITHOUT ERROR. /AUTHOR/
