THE USE OF GAMMA DIFFUSION TO MEASURE DENSITY BY MEANS OF EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS (IN FRENCH)

THERE EXIST THREE MAJOR PROBLEMS WHEN MEASURING THE DENSITY OF A MATERIAL WITH A GAMMA DIFFUSION APPARATUS: THE INFLUENCE OF THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE MATERIAL ON THE MEASUREMENT, THE SENSITIVITY OF THE APPARATUS TO DENSITY, AND THE DEPTH OF INVESTIGATION WHICH CAN BE REACHED BY THE APPARATUS. THOSE THREE POINTS WERE STUDIED IN A SERIES OF TESTS. A SPECTRAL STUDY SHOWED THAT BY USING A DISCRIMATION FOR COUNTING THE PHOTONS LEAVING THE MATERIAL, IT WAS POSSIBLE TO ELIMINATE THE INFLUENCE OF CHEMICAL COMPOSITION. THE STUDY OF SENSITIVITY TO DENSITY OF THE VARIOUS GEOMETRIES STUDIED SHOWED THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO ADOPT A CONSIDERABLE DISTANCE BETWEEN SOURCE AND SENSOR, AND A LOW THRESHOLD OF DISCRIMATION IN ORDER TO OBTAIN GOOD SENSITIVITY. STUDY RESULTS ALSO SHOW THAT THE DEPTH OF INVESTIGATION REACHED BY THE APPARATUS DECREASES WHEN THE THRESHOLD OF DISCRIMATION IS RAISED, BUT AUGMENTS WHEN THE DISTANCE BETWEEN SOURCE AND SENSOR IS INCREASED. /(A)/LCPC/RRL/
