SOME APPLICATIONS OF A RAPID METHOD FOR TESTING THE ELECTRO- CHEMICAL CORROSION OF STEEL IN MORTAR OR CONCRETE WITH THE ADDITION OF AN ADMIXTURE /IN FRENCH/

TESTS ARE MADE ON SPECIEMNS FABRICATED IN MOLDS OF HARD RUBBER HAVING A FORM OF A FRUSTUM OF A CIRCULAR CONE USED IN VICAT TESTS. A PIECE OF STEEL WIRE IS PLACED AT THE SPECIMEN CENTRE. AFTER 24 HOURS OF CONSERVATION IN AN AIR-DONDITIONED ROOM, THE WIRE POTENTIAL IS MEASURED WITH RESPECT TO A COPPER SULFATE HALF-CELL, THE POROUS BOTTOM OF WHICH IS PLACED IN CONTACT WITH THE SURFACE OF THE SPECIMEN. AFTER MAKING MEASUREMENTS EVERY DAY DURING A WEEK OF MORE, ACCORDING TO CIRCUMSTANCES, A CURVE IS PLOTTED WHERE THE POTENTIALS VALUES ARE TAKEN FOR ORDINATES AND THE TIME FOR ABSCISSAS. WHEN THE CURVE, WHICH WAS PLOTTED FOR THE SPECIMENS WITH AN ADMIXTURE, IS AT THE GREATER DISTANCE, VERTICALLY FROM THE ABSCISSAS AXIS, THAN THE CURVE PLOTTED FOR THE SPECIMENS WITHOUT THE ADMIXTURE. THIS SHOWS THAT THE FILM OF FERRIC OXIDE-CALCIUM OXIDE, WHICH IS FORMED BY PORTLAND ON THE SURFACE OF THE STEEL AND PROTECTED FROM ATTACK, WAS DAMAGED BY THE ADMIXTURE. HENCE THE ADMIXTURE OUGHT TO BE CONSIDERED AS DANGEROUS FOR THE STEEL REINFORECMENT. THE RESULTS OF TESTING SOME ADMIXTURES ARE PRESENTED. /RRL/LCPC/A/
