REMOTE SENSING APPLICATIONS TO HIGHWAY ENGINEERING
IN RECENT YEARS, THE AVAILABILITY OF NEW REMOTE SENSORS - RADAR, INFRARED, MULTICHANNEL - HAS INITIATED A NEW ERA IN THE APPLICATION OF INTERPRETATION TECHNIQUES IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING. THE DATA PROVIDED BY THE MANY TYPES OF SENSORS FURNISH INFORMATION PREVIOUSLY UNOBTAINABLE, OR AVAILABLE ONLY AT GREAT EXPENSE. IN THIS PAPER, THE AREAS OF POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF REMOTE SENSORS IN THE HIGHWAY FIELD ARE DISCUSSED. SEVERAL EXAMPLES ARE INCLUDED TO DEMONSTRATE THE VALUE OF REMOTE SENSORS IN VARIOUS ASPECTS OF HIGHWAY ENGINEERING. ALSO INCLUDED IS A DISCUSSION OF THE PUBLIC ROADS RESEARCH PROGRAM IN REMOTE SENSING. /AUTHOR/
