PREFORMED ELASTIC EXPANSION JOINTS FOR SKEW HIGHWAY STRUCTURES
NEOPRENE SEALS WITH A HONEYCOMB CROSS SECTION HAVE PROVED ADAPTABLE TO SKEW JOINTS IN BRIDGES. THEY CAN PROVIDE A WATERTIGHT JOINT FOR UP TO 135 FT OF STRUCTURE WHEN AT A ROADWAY SKEW ANGLE UP TO 60 DEG AND 240 FT FOR A ROADWAY SKEW OF UP TO 20 DEG. AN ANGULAR DEFLECTION OF THE NEOPRENE OF 10 DEG, AS IT IS COMPRESSED, HAS BEEN USED SUCCESSFULLY. USE AND EXPERIMENTATION CAN BE EXPECTED TO SHOW THAT THIS ANGLE CAN BE INCREASED. STEEL FACING ANGLES WITH RETAINER BARS FOR THE SEAL ARE RECOMMENDED. /ASCE/
