COST/EFFECTIVENESS IN NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING
NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING IS PERFORMED FOR SAFETY OR PROFITS. NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING PERFORMS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE FIELD OF AIRCRAFT TRANSPORTATION, RAILROAD TRANSPORTATION, AND IN MANY CHEMICAL AND MANUFACTURING PROCESSES. THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF RAILROADS MAKES THE INSPECTION OF CAR AXLES FOR FATIGUE CRACKS A MANDATORY REQUIREMENT ON ALL EQUIPMENT COMING UNDER ITS RULES OF INTERCHANGE TO AVOID WRECKS DUE TO AXLE FAILURE. THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY USES NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF SUCH CRITICAL COMPONENTS AS STEERING GEAR PARTS. NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTS ARE USED IN THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTION PROCESSES: (1) FAULTY OR WRONG MATERIAL IS PREVENTED FROM ENTERING THE FLOW OF PRODUCTION, (2) BY DETECTING FLAWS EARLY, SALVAGE BY REPAIR IS USUALLY EASIER, SINCE DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES ARE MUCH LOOSER, AND (3) IN ALL PROCESSES OF PRODUCTION, THE SOONER A FLAW IS DETECTED, THE SOONER CORRECTIVE ACTION MAY BE TAKEN TO ELIMINATE ITS CAUSE. COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS IS A PART OF EVERY MANAGEMENT OPERATION TODAY. THE COST-BENEFITS ACHEIVED BY USE OF NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING ARE SUMMARIZED. THE CONVENTIONAL ECONOMICS OF NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING WILL SOON BE INCLUDED IN AN ORGANIZED FASHION IN THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS.
