CONTROL FIRE
WITH FREQUENT LOSS OF LIFE AND PROPERTY FROM FIRE, THE DEMAND FOR REDUCED FLAMABILITY AND MATERIALS WITH GREATER HEAT RESISTANCE IS INCREASING. INEFFECTIVE PREVENTION ALLOWS FIRES TO START. IT SPREADS THROUGH MATERIALS THAT FEED THE FLAMES. TWO MAJOR BOTTLENECKS ARE ENCOUNTERED: THE REDUCTION OF FLAMMABILITY WITHOUT ADVERSELY AFFECTING THE PROPERTIES OF THE PRODUCT, AND MAINTAINING THE COST OF THE PRODUCT AT A COMPETITIVE LEVEL. TO REDUCE FLAMMABILITY OF PLASTICS, WOOD AND OTHER STRUCTURES IN ORDER TO MEET NEW FIRE STANDARDS, THE USUAL APPROACH IS TO USE PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR SURFACE TREATMENTS. HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS CAN BE CAUSED BY FLAMMABLE VAPORS IGNITED BY STATIC SPARKS, DEFECTIVE ELECTRIC HEATERS, INADEQUATE VENTILATION, COMBUSTIBLES NEAR HEAT, LEAKING FLAMMABLE HYDRAULIC OIL, OVER-HEATED BEARINGS, FAILURE OF STEAM CONTROL VALVE OR PIPING AND INADEQUATE DUST REMOVAL FACILITIES. TO ELIMINATE THE FLAMABLE HYDRAULIC OIL PROBLEM, ONE MANUFACTURER, THE STANDARD TOOL COMPANY IS PRODUCING INJECTION MOLDING MACHINES WITH A NON-BURNING LIQUID. MANY FIRE-RETARDANT PLASTICS NOW AVAILABLE WILL DRASTICALLY CUT FIRE ORIGIN AND SPREAD. THE DANGERS OF SCRAP MATERIALS ARE DISCUSSED AS WELL AS THE INFLUENCE OF FIRE RETARDANTS.
