THE CASE FOR GALVANIZED REBARS
MUCH ATTENTION HAS BEEN FOCUSED RECENTLY ON GALVANIZED REINFORCING STEEL ESPECIALLY SINCE ZINC-COATED REBARS ARE BEING SPECIFIED MORE FREQUENTLY FOR EXTERIOR APPLICATIONS WHERE THIN CONCRETE COVERAGE IS REQUIRED. HOT DIP GALVANIZING OF REINFORCING STEEL AFTER FABRICATION IS AN EFFECTIVE SAFEGUARD AGAINST POSSIBLE CORROSION AND RESULTING RED RUST, WHICH COULD BLEED THROUGH TO THE SURFACE AND CAUSE STAINING AND UNSIGHTLY DISCOLORATION. GALVANIZING OF REINFORCING STEEL ALSO HELPS CONTROL SPALLING AND CRACKING OF CONCRETE BY ELIMINATING RUST BUILDUP ON THE STEEL. THE BOND VALUE OF GALVANIZED MATERIAL IS CONSIDERED TO BE AT LEAST AS GOOD AS THAT OF BARE STEEL. IN MANY CASES, HOWEVER, THE GALVANIZED STEEL WAS FOUND TO HAVE A BETTER BOND THAN PLAIN STEEL. RESULTS OF ONE INVESTIGATION INDICATED THAT IF FUTURE CONCRETE MIX DESIGNS COULD BE IMPROVED TO PREVENT ABSORPTION OF THE SALTS, REINFORCING STEEL WOULD BE PROTECTED ADEQUATELY. BUT IT MIGHT ALSO TURN OUT TO BE CHEAPER TO HOT DIP GALVANIZE THE REINFORCING STEEL AFTER FABRICATION. GALVANIZED REBAR PROBABLY SHOULD BE USED WHENEVER THERE IS ANY DOUBT ABOUT THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CONCRETE COVER. HIGHLY CORROSIVE ATMOSPHERES AND ENVIRONMENTS, SUCH AS LOCATIONS NEAR SALT WATER ARE CHEMICAL CONTAMINANTS, EXPOSED STRUCTURES, OR STRUCTURES WHERE PUBLIC SAFETY IS A FACTOR, SHOULD DICTATE THE SPECIFICATION OF HOT DIP GALVANIZING. ZINC-COATED REINFORCING MAY WELL PROVE TO BE A REAL MONEY-SAVER.
