THE SIGNIFICANCE OF RECENT CIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COLOR MEASUREMENT

A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF RECENT DECISIONS OF THE CIE COMMITTEE E-1.3.1, WHICH SINCE 1931 HAS PROVIDED THE QUANTITATIVE BACKGROUND FOR THE SCIENCE OF COLORIMETRY. A SERIES OF DAYLIGHT ILLUMINANTS WERE ADOPTED, ADDING TO THE USE OF THE THREE STANDARD SOURCES IN EFFECT SINCE 1931. THE PRESENT RECOMMENDATION STATES THAT AT PRESENT NO ARTIFICIAL SOURCE IS RECOMMENDED TO REPRESENT STANDARD ILLUMINANTS. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE ON A VARIETY OF ASPECTS OF COLOR MEASUREMENT, INCLUDING NEW STANDARD LIGHT SOURCES AND OBSERVERS, WHITE REFLECTANCE STANDARDS, COLOR-DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS, AND ILLUMINATING-VIEWING CONDITIONS.
