CORROSION IN STEEL WATER MAINS
CONDITIONS WHICH MAY PRODUCE CORROSION OF STEEL WATER PIPE AND VARIOUS MEANS OF CONTROLLING IT ARE DESCRIBED. A CORROSION SURVEY OF THE PLANNED ROUTE OF A PROJECT SHOULD BE MADE TO DETERMINE POSSIBLE PROBLEMS WHILE CHANGES STILL CAN BE MADE. THE CONDITIONS PRODUCING EXTERNAL GALVANIC CORROSION ARE DISCUSSED. PROTECTION CAN BE PROVIDED BY USING AN INCREASED WALL THICKNESS AS A CORROSION ALLOWANCE. HOWEVER, IT IS USUALLY LESS EXPENSIVE TO USE AN ENAMEL COATING AND CATHODIC PROTECTION. INTERNAL PROTECTION CAN BE PROVIDED BY A COAL TAR ENAMEL OR A CEMENT LINING. INTERNAL CATHODIC PROTECTION CAN ALSO BE USED. CEMENT MORTAR COATINGS PROVIDE GOOD PROTECTION, BUT ARE SAID TO BE LIMITED TO AREAS WHERE CONGESTION OF UTILITIES MAKES THE USE OF CATHODIC PROTECTION DIFFICULT. /AUTHOR/
