DETERMINATION OF THE OPTIMUM THICKNESS OF THE DECKS OF BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURES

WITH A VIEW TO POSSIBLE STANDARDIZATION BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURES INCORPORATING A SLAB DECK WERE STUDIED. TYPICAL OVERPASSES OF VARIOUS WIDTHS OVER HIGHWAYS WITH A VARIETY OF CROSS SECTIONAL SHAPES WERE SELECTED AND USED AS THE BASIS OF A STUDY OF DIFFERENT BRIDGE CLASSES. ON THE BASIS OF STRUCTURAL ANALYSES, BOTH THE CONSTRUCTIONAL FEASIBILITY AND THE MINIMUM DECK THICKNESS NECESSARY WAS ESTABLISHED. FOLLOWING A STUDY OF VARIOUS BOUNDARY VALUES FOR UNIT PRICES, THE POSSIBLE CONSTRUCTION COSTS WERE DERIVED. THE REGION WITH THE MINIMUM CONSTRUCTION COSTS WAS FOUND TO BE THAT WITH THE OPTIMUM PLATE THICKNESS. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY FORM A USEFUL AID FOR DESIGN OF SIMILAR STRUCTURES OR THE ASSESSMENT OF TENDERS.
