IGNITION NOISE IN NEUTRON MOISTURE GAGES
SPARK-FIRED ENGINES WERE FOUND TO COUPLE SPURIOUS COUNTS INTO NEUTRON MOISTURE GAUGES. ELECTROMAGNETIC COUPLING TO THE CABLE CONNECTING THE PROBE UNIT AND COUNTER UNIT SEEMED TO BE THE CAUSE. PULSES WERE APPARENTLY AMPLIFIED IN THE PROBE UNIT AND DULY RECORDED IN THE COUNTING UNIT. INTERFERENCE WAS NOT NOTED IN CASES WHERE THE CABLE WAS POSITIONED NO CLOSER THAN 3 FT FROM ANY PORTION OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE. IF MOISTURE MEASUREMENTS ARE TO BE MADE IN THE VICINITY OF OPERATING SPARK-FIRED ENGINES, A TEST FOR INTERFERENCE SHOULD BE MADE. /ASCE/
