WITH REFERENCE TO THE REGULATIONS, A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF THE CURRENT SITUATION AND EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS, THE AIM WAS TO EXAMINE THE BEST METHOD OF INDICATING TRAFFIC LANES AND DIRECTIONS ON ROAD SIGNS. THE MOST FAVOURABLE REPRESENTATION WAS THE COMBINED LANE AND DIRECTION REFERENCE ARRANGED ON AN OVERHEAD PANEL. DEFINITE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VARIOUS ARROW ALIGNMENTS COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT UPWARD POINTING ARROWS SHOULD BE USED, BECAUSE THESE SHOW THE CLOSEST ANALOGY TO THE TRAFFIC SITUATION.
