FLAME-STRAIGHTENING STRUCTURAL MEMBERS
DEFLECTION AND DISTORTION OF STRUCTURAL STEEL MEMBERS OCCUR FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS. A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF MISALIGNMENT CAN BE CORRECTED BY THE JUDICIOUS USE OF AN OXYACETYLENE TORCH. USING THE COLD FULCRUM PRINCIPLE OF LOCAL HEAT APPLICATION OPENS UP A RELATIVELY QUICK AND EFFECTIVE MEANS FOR THE READJUSTMENT OF BEAM ALIGNMENT. THE PRINCIPLE EMPLOYED IS THE CONTRAST BETWEEN EXPANSION OF A LIMITED AREA BECAUSE OF THE LOCAL APPLICATION OF HEAT, AND ITS SUBSEQUENT CONTRACTION WHICH CAUSES A PULL AGAINST THE COLD AREAS SURROUNDING IT. DIAGRAMS SHOW THE METHOD OF APPLICATION OF HEAT TO THE DAMAGED AREAS. /AUTHOR/
