CORROSION PREVENTION OF THE BOSTON CALLAHAN TUNNEL
THIS PAPER CONCERNS THE DEVELOPMENT OF CORROSION PREVENTION METHODS FOR THE LT. WILLIAM F. CALLAHAN, JR. TUNNEL BETWEEN BOSTON AND EAST BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. THE TUNNEL CONTAINED SEVERAL UNUSUAL STRUCTURAL FEATURES WHICH PROVED CHALLENGING FROM A CORROSION STANDPOINT. SOME SPECIFIC CONCLUSIONS CAN BE MADE CONCERNING THE CORROSION CONTROL OF THE EXTERNAL STEEL LINER PLATE SURFACES OF THE TUNNEL. THE DISTRIBUTION OF STRAY CURRENT FLOW AND SUPERPOSITION EFFECT FROM CATHODIC PROTECTION CAN BE MEASURED WITHIN THE METALLICALLY CONTINUOUS CALLAHAN TUNNEL. AFTER 1 1/2 YEARS, CATHODIC PROTECTION APPLIED CONTINUOUSLY AT ONE LOCATION ON THE CALLAHAN TUNNEL HAS RESULTED IN THE ACCUMULATION OF POLARIZATION EFFECT. APPROACHING FULLY PROTECTIVE POTENTIALS. MOMENTARY PEAKS OF STRAY CURRENT FLOW, FREQUENTLY REVERSING DIRECTION, DO NOT APPRECIABLY DEPLETE THE ACCUMULATED POLARIZATION EFFECTS FROM CATHODIC PROTECTION. /AUTHOR/
