SIGNIFICANT VARIABLES IN CHECKING THE PERFORMANCE OF ULTRASONIC INSPECTION SYSTEMS FOR STEEL
A PROCEDURE WHICH CAN BE READILY PERFORMED BY THE OPERATOR HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR CHECKING THE PERFORMANCE OF AN ULTRASONIC INSPECTION SYSTEM. IN CONDUCTING THIS WORK, NUMEROUS VARIABLES WERE ENCOUNTERED AND AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO ESTABLISH THEIR EFFECT. THESE INCLUDED COUPLANT, CABLE AND REFERENCE BLOCKS. THIS WORK POINTS OUT VIVIDLY THE NEED FOR CHECKING THE PERFORMANCE OF ULTRASONIC EQUIPMENT IN ORDER TO INSURE THAT AN ADEQUATE TEST IS BEING CONDUCTED AND THAT SUPPLIER AND USER AGREE ON INSPECTION RESULTS. ASIDE FROM THIS, AND OF EQUAL IMPORTANCE TO IT, THE WORK SHOWS THE URGENT NEED FOR STANDARDIZATION. /AUTHOR/
