MEASUREMENTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT OF FORCES AND MOVEMENT WITHIN THE ROAD CONTACT AREA OF CROSS-PLY TYRES. IT IS POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF BRAKING AND DRIVING SLIP ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF FORCES AND MOVEMENT. PARTICULARLY NOTEWORTHY IS THE RESULT THAT IN THE BRAKING CONDITION THE TRANSVERSE SHEAR IN THE RISING HALF OF THE DEFORMED SECTION CHANGES ITS DIRECTION. THIS RESULTS IN A PARTIALLY ASYMMETRIC TRANSVERSE EXPANSION OF THE TYRE, THE IMMEDIATE CONSEQUENCE OF WHICH IS INTEGRAL SIDE FORCES. IN MOVEMENT GREATER CIRCUMFERENTIAL FORCES ARE REACHED THAN IN BRAKING. THIS RELATION MAY BE TRACED FROM THE FACT THAT IN THE MOVING SITUATION PRESSURE AND CIRCUMFERENTIAL SLIP MAXIMA OCCUR IN THE SAME AREA OF THE CONTACT SURFACE. THE RESULTS OF THE MOVEMENT MEASUREMENTS INFER THAT EVEN WITH HIGH EXTERNAL SLIP THERE EXIST ADHESIVE ZONES IN THE CONTACT AREA. THE LENGTH OF THIS AREA OF ADHESION DEPENDS UPON THE PERIPHERAL ELASTICITY OF THE TYRE AND UPON THE PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION IN THE DEFORMED SECTION. IT CAN BE DEMONSTRATED THAT THE MERIDIONAL CURVATURE OF THE RUNNING SURFACE HAS A SPECIAL IMPORTANCE WITH RESPECT TO THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE PRESSURE AND THEREFORE ALSO AFFECTS MOVEMENT OF THE CONTACT SECTION. THE PROFILE OF THE TYRE ALSO HAS A ROLE TO PERFORM IN THIS CONNECTION. THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE DIFFERENT PROTECTION INDENTATIONS SHOW THAT EVERY PROFILE MODIFICATION PRODUCES A DIFFERENT EFFECT UPON THE MOVEMENT INSIDE THE DEFORMED SECTION BECAUSE OF THE ASSOCIATED CHANGE IN ELASTICITY. FURTHER INTO THE TRIALS IT BECAME CLEAR THAT A PROFILE INDENTATION ALSO AFFECTS THE STIFFNESS OF THE TYRE AND THUS IS IMPORTANT FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF PRESSURE.
