PROTECTIVE COSTINGS
A RESEARCH PROGRAM IN HOLLAND RESULTED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TWO NEW TYPES OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS WHICH COMPLEMENTARY TO ONE ANOTHER. THESE ARE A ZINC-RICH EPOXY RESIN, TWO COMPONENT PRIMER AND A MICACEOUS IRON ORE EPOXY-RESIN PAINT. THE FORMER IS WIDELY USED TO FIGHT RUST AND THE LATTER WAS EVOLVED FOLLOWING AN APRECIATION OF THE VALUE OF THIS TYPE OF MATERIAL AS AN EFFECTIVE BARRIER COATING TO PROTECT THE PRIMER. MATERIALS IN THIS RANGE ARE NOW MARKETED INTERNATIONALLY AS MICANOX. THIS SYSTEM COMBINES THE BENEFITS OF A BARRIER COATING WITH THE ADVANTAGE OF THE CATHODIC PROTECTION ASSOCIATED WITH METALLIC ZINC.
