MANNHEIMER TUNNELBAUVERFAHREN
HITHERTO THE DEVELOPMENT OF TUNNELLING MACHINES FOR HARD ROCK HAS EXCEEDED THAT FOR LOOSE MATERIAL, EXCEPT WHERE CONSIDERABLE DEPTHS ARE INVOLVED. A TECHNIQUE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED, WHICH ALSO REPLACES MANNUAL EXCAVATION IN SOIL BY MACHINE EXCAVATION: THE MANNHEIM TUNNELLING METHOD, USED FOR THE EXCAVATION OF LARGE DUCTS UNDER DIFFICULT SOIL, GROUNDWATER AND TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. THE EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT THIS TECHNIQUE IS ALSO SUITABLE FOR USE IN LARGE TUNNELS SUCH AS UNDERGROUND RAILWAY SECTIONS.
