AN OVERALL REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE STATE OF DEVELOPMENT OF CAST IRON WITH LAMELLAR AND SPHERICAL GRAPHITE IN REGARD TO THE PROPERTIES OF THIS MATERIAL AND ITS WORKABILITY WHICH FACILITATE ITS USE FOR LOAD BEARING TUNNEL LININGS PARTICULARLY UNDER DIFFICULT GROUND CONDITIONS. HIGH ELASTICITY AND STRENGTH VALUES IN COMBINATION WITH GOOD WELDING AND WORKABILITY PROPERTIES PROVIDE SOME FREEDOM OF CONSTRUCTION, SIMPLICITY OF ERECTION, OF TUNNEL THICKNESS, AND ECONOMY. THE GREAT IMPORTANCE OF THE CORROSION RESISTANCE AND ALMOST UNLIMITED ADAPTABILITY OF CAST IRON TUNNEL LININGS ARE CONSIDERED.
