THE DESIGN OF STRUCTURES FOR EARTHQUAKE LOADING IS MEANINGFUL, WHERE HIGH SAFETY DEMANDS MUST BE SPECIFIED OR WHERE THE CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS ARE BEING USED TO THEIR CAPACITY AND VIBRATION RESPONSIVE BUILDING METHODS ARE USED. A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE STATE OF THE ART OF RESEARCH AND PRACTICE. GEOLOGICAL CAUSES OF EARTHQUAKES ARE OUTLINED AND METHODS OF CALCULATION FOR DETERMINING THE EARTHQUAKE LOADING ARE ASSEMBLED. THE CALCULATION IS EXPLAINED WITH THE AID OF EXAMPLES OF A SINGLE MASS OSCILLATOR AND A SIMPLE OSCILLATOR WITH DISTRIBUTED MASSES. INFORMATION IS PRESENTED ON EARTHQUAKE LOADING ON VARIOUS STRUCTURES (TALL BUILDINGS, BRIDGES, REACTOR STRUCTURES, PRESSURE VESSELS, PIPELINES).
