PRACTICAL METHOD FOR THE DESIGN OF SLENDER REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS WITH RECTANGULAR CROSS SECTIONS SUBJECT TO BIAXIAL BENDING AND AXIAL COMPRESSION

AN APPROXIMATION METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE LOAD BEARING CAPACITY OR THE NECESSARY REINFORCEMENT FOR SLENDER REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS OF RECTANGULAR CROSS SECTION UNDER BIAXIAL BENDING AND AXIAL COMPRESSION. THE METHOD HAS THE ADVANTAGE THAT IN THE DESIGN OF BIAXIALLY LOADED COLUMNS, ONLY THE KNOWN DESIGN BASES FOR UNIAXIAL BUCKLING ARE NECESSARY. GOOD CORRELATION IS OBTAINED BETWEEN THE CALCULATED RESULTS, THE THEORETICAL EXACT SOLUTION, AND THE RESULTS OF SHORT TERM FAILURE TESTS ON BIAXIALLY LOADED REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS.
