THE QUESTION AS TO HOW FAR A GALVANISED LAYER CAN BE CORRODED OR DISSOLVED BY THE ALKALINE COMPONENTS OF CEMENT WAS FIRST EXAMINED IN LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS IN WHICH AMPHOTERIC ZINC WAS DEPOSITED IN CALCIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTIONS. IN THESE EXPERIMENTS THE INFLUENCE OF CHROME ADDITIVES AS INHIBITORS WAS STUDIED. TO CONCLUDE, THE BEHAVIOUR OF REINFORCED GALVANISED STEELS WAS STUDIED DURING EXPERIMENTS INVOLVING VARIATIONS IN THE TYPE OF CEMENT AND CHROMIUM CONTENT. FURTHERMORE PART OF THE CEMENT SAMPLE STUDIED CONTAINED CHLORIDE AND A STUDY OF ITS INFLUENCE ON GALVANISATION WAS ALSO CARRIED OUT.
