PLASTICS FOR ROAD SURFACING{

THE SUITABILITY OF A PLASTIC, KNOWN AS VESTOPAL, FOR USE AS A PROTECTIVE MATERIAL FOR ROAD SURFACES IS DISCUSSED. IT IS APPLIED IN THE FORM OF A MORTAR OF BINDER AND ADDITIVES PLUS FINE-GRAINED AGGREGATE MATERIALS. THE BINDER, A POLYESTER RESIN, IS COMPOSED OF UNSATURATED POLYESTERS AND STYROL IN LIQUID FORM. THE ADDITION OF CATALYSTS AND ACCELERATORS CAUSE THE SOLUTION OR APPLIED MORTAR TO HARDEN OR INCREASE IN STRENGTH. THE MATERIAL IS WORKED AT TEMPERATURES ABOVE 5 C, PREFERABLY, AND WITHOUT APPLYING PRESSURE. AFTER HARDENING IT IS RESISTANT TO WATER AND SALT SOLUTIONS /SEA WATER/, GASOLINE AND DIESEL OIL, SOLVENTS, DILUTE ACIDS AND ALKALIS. THE PLASTIC MORTAR HAS A VERY HIGH COHESION. A VERY SLIGHT VARIATION IN THE BINDER CONTENT WILL PERMIT ANY DESIRED DEGREE OF WORKABILITY. THE HARDENED MORTAR WAS TESTED FOR TENSILE STRENGTH UNDER BENDING, COMPRESSION RESISTANCE, TENSILE STRENGTH AND SHEAR RESISTANCE, USING THREE CONCRETE SLABS CEMENTED TOGETHER WITH VESTOPAL MORTAR. BOTH CEMENTED JOINTS WERE SUBJECTED TO EQUAL SHEAR STRESSES UNDER LOAD TESTING. IT HAS WEAR RESISTANCE CONSIDERABLY HIGHER THAN THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT FOR ROAD CONCRETE, GOOD FREEZE AND THAW RESISTANCE, AND ADEQUATE BONDING STRENGTH WITH CONCRETE SURFACES. IT DOES NOT WORK WITH BITUMINOUS SURFACES BECAUSE THE STYROL SOLVENT DISSOLVES THE BITUMEN.
