SIMULATION OF EMERGENCY BRAKING WITH VARIOUS WHEEL-LOCK PREVENTION DEVICES ON CARRIAGEWAYS WITH VARYING SKID RESISTANCE

SIMULATION VON PANIKBREMSUNGEN MIT VERSCHIEDENEN BLOCKIERVERHINDERERN AUF FAHRBAHNEN GETEILTER GRIFFIGKEIT

THE MATHEMATICAL SIMULATION OF EMERGENCY BRAKING WITH, AND WITHOUT, ANTI LOCKING DEVICES IS DESCRIBED. THE BASIS FOR IT IS A COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR THE REPRESENTATION OF A VEHICLE BRAKING AND STEERING SYSTEM WITH SEVEN DEGREES OF FREEDOM: LONGITUDINAL - SIDEWAYS - AND TURNING MOVEMENT OF THE WHOLE VEHICLE, TURNING MOVEMENT OF THE FOUR WHEELS. THE APPLICABLE CONSTANTS FOR THE TYRE MECHANICS HAVE BEEN EXTRACTED FROM MEASURED TYRE CHARACTERISTIC CURVES FOR PERIPHERAL AND LATERAL DIRECTIONS. THE CALCULATIONS REPRESENT THREE TYPICAL PRIVATE CARS OF THE SAME MASS BUT HAVING DIFFERENT CENTRES OF GRAVITY AND LAYOUT. ANTILOCKING DEVICES OF A REALISTIC NATURE FORM PART OF THE ACCESSORIES TO THE PROGRAM. IN PARTICULAR THE RESULTS FOR FOUR-WHEELED ANTILOCKING DEVICES WITH INDEPENDENT CONTROL OF ALL FOUR WHEELS AND WITH SELECT LOW CONTROL OF THE REAR AXLE IS COMPARED TO THE BEHAVIOUR OF VEHICLES WITHOUT ANTILOCKING DEVICES, DURING WHICH LATTER CASE MOVEMENT TAKES PLACE AFTER A SHORT BRAKING PERIOD WITH FOUR LOCKED WHEELS. WITHIN THE SIMULATION MODEL BRAKING IS CONSIDERED ON A CARRIAGEWAY WITH VARYING CROSS-SECTIONAL SKID RESISTANCE AND ALSO WITH AND WITHOUT DRIVER REACTION. THE MOVEMENT BEHAVIOUR IS DESCRIBED IN TERMS OF A LINEAR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION, WHICH HAS BEEN DERIVED FROM TRIALS WITH VEHICLES HAVING OBLIQUELY OPERATING BRAKES. IT SHOWS THAT BY EMERGENCY BRAKING ON CARRIAGEWAYS WITH VARYING SKID RESISTANCE, A VEHICLE HAVING TWO AXLE LOCKING DEVICES AND SELECT LOW ON THE REAR AXLE REMAINS WELL UNDER CONTROL. THE VEHICLE WITH REAR AXLE LOCKING DEVICES ALSO RESISTS THE TENDENCY TO SKID BUT REQUIRES A LONGER BRAKING PERIOD.
