IN THE DIMENSIONING OF LARGE DIAMETER PILES FOR THE LOAD COMBINATION HA (MAIN AND SPECIAL LOADS DUE TO IMPACT) THERE ARE STILL UNCERTAINTIES AT PRESENT REGARDING THE CALCULATION MODEL TO BE USED. USING THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS CARRIED OUT BY THE MUNICH BUNDESBAHNZENTRALAMT (CENTRAL OFFICE OF THE GERMAN RAILWAY MUNICH) FOR PILES WHICH WERE SUBJECTED TO IMPACT BY A VEHICLE, A FIRST DRAFT FOR SUPPLEMENTING THE "RICHTLINIE FUR DIE BEMESSUNG UND AUSFUHRUNG MASSIVER BRUCKEN" (REGULATIONS FOR DIMENSIONING AND CONSTRUCTION OF MASSIVE BRIDGES) HAS TO BE DRAWN UP. THE DYNAMIC SYSTEM IS THUS CONVERTED TO A STATIC EQUIVALENT SYSTEM WHOSE CHARACTERISTIC QUANTITIES MUST BE DETERMINED. IN PARTICULAR IT INVOLVES THE DESCRIPTION OF THE HORIZONTAL FOUNDATION OF THE PILE IN THE GROUND, THE GROUND, THE SIZE OF THE DECISIVE STATIC HORIZONTAL EQUIVALENT LOAD AND THE EFFECT OF THE PILE LENGTH ON THE WAY ITS CROSS-SECTION CHANGES. IN ADDITION, THE NECESSARY CONSTRUCTIONAL DETAILS ARE DISCUSSED. THE STUDY MUST BE ARRANGED WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF CONSTRUCTIONAL CATASTROPHE PREVENTION.
