PLASTIC CABLE COVERING
THE BIDWELL BAR BRIDGE, IN CALIFORNIA, WILL BE THE FIRST BRIDGE TO HAVE SUSPENSION CABLES WRAPPED IN GLASS REINFORCED PLASTICS. THE SYSTEM OF WRAPPING CABLES WAS FIRST INVENTED IN FRANCE BUT PERFECTED BY ROEBLING IN THIS COUNTRY. HIS METHOD WAS TO USE SOFT ANNEALED WIRE WHICH WAS THEN PAINTED TO FORM AN AIR-TIGHT COVERING OVER THE CABLES. SINCE IT IS DIFFICULT, IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, TO INSPECT CABLES WHEN THEY ARE ONCE IN USE, THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THIS METHOD HAS NOT BEEN PROVED. IN ONE OR TWO CASES, CABLES HAVE BEEN FOUND TO BE SERIOUSLY DETERIORATED. WITH THE ADVENT OF NEW PLASTICS, EXPERIMENTS WERE UNDERTAKEN TO SEE IF THEY COULD BE USED AS WRAPPINGS. A GLASS-REINFORCED ACRYLIC RESIN WHICH SEEMS TO MEET THE EXACTING REQUIREMENTS OF BRIDGE CABLES, HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. IF THE COVERING IS APPLIED TO SPUN CABLES, POLYETHYLENE FILLERS ARE USED. IF IT APPLIED TO PARALLEL WIRE CABLES, THE COVERING IS APPLIED DIRECTLY TO THE CABLES. IT CAN BE APPLIED TO EXISTING CABLES FOR THEIR FUTURE PROTECTION. /AUTHOR/
