INVESTIGATION INTO A METHOD FOR ASSESSING THE ADHESION OF PAINT COATINGS. PART 2
THE DIRECT PULL-OFF TECHNIQUE WAS INVESTIGATED AS A METHOD FOR ASSESSING THE ADHESION CHARACTERISTICS OF SINGLE AND MULTI-COAT PAINT SYSTEMS. TESTS CARRIED OUT ON A VINYL COPOLYMER PAINT APPLIED TO MILD STEEL ARE REPORTED AND AN ACCOUNT IS GIVEN OF INVESTIGATIONS CONDUCTED ON THE FIVE MULTICOAT PAINT SYSTEMS BEFORE AND AFTER EXPOSURE TO ACCELERATED WEATHERING. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON THE TEST RESULTS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED. THE FINDINGS ARE DISCUSSED AND IT IS CONCLUDED THAT, IN VIEW OF THE DIFFICULTY IN DEFINING ALL THE VARIABLES INVOLVED, ESPECIALLY THOSE ASSOCIATED WITH SURFACE PREPARATION AND PAINT APPLICATION CONDITIONS, THE TECHNIQUE OFFERS LITTLE PROMISE AS A STANDARD METHOD OF TEST, ALTHOUGH IT HAS VALUE IN THE PREDICTION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF PAINTS, SUCH AS IN THE STUDY OF CHANGES IN THE ADHESION PROPERTIES OF PAINT SYSTEMS WITH VARYING STANDARDS OF SURFACE PREPARATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE. /AUTHOR/
