THE ARROW DROP TEST IS USED TO INVESTIGATE THE BEHAVIOUR OF SAFETY GLASS UNDER THE IMPACT OF POINTED BODIES. THE APPARATUS CONSISTS OF A STEEL ARROW WEIGHING 200 G+/- 2G, A DROPPING DEVICE WHICH ALLOWS THE DROP HEIGHT TO BE ADJUSTED 10 CM AT A TIME AND DOES NOT IMPART ANY IMPULSE TO THE ARROW, THE SAMPLE HOLDER, TEMPERATURE CONTROL SYSTEM AND SCALES. THE VARIOUS ITEMS ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. THE SAMPLES TO BE TESTED SHOULD BE 300+/- 500 MM SQUARE, AND THE THICKNESS SHOULD BE THE NORMAL THICKNESS WITHIN THE MANUFACTURING TOLERANCES. SAMPLES SHOULD BE PLANE AND SHOULD HAVE SMOOTH EDGES. AT LEAST TEN TESTS SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT AT EACH TEST TEMPERATURE. DEPENDING ON THE QUALITY REQUIREMENTS THE TEST TEMPERATURES SHOULD BE +40, +23 AND/ OR -20 DEG. C. THE TEST PIECES SHOULD BE PLACED IN THE HOLDER SO THAT THE EXTERIAL SIDE FACES THE ARROW. THE DISTANCE OF THE POINT OF IMPACT OF THE ARROW FROM THE CENTRE OF THE SAMPLE SHOULD NOT BE GREATER THAN 25 MM. AFTER THE TEST THE NATURE AND THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE ARE NOTED. IN THE TEST REPORT THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION SHOULD BE GIVEN WITH REFERENCE TO THE STANDARD: THE TYPE OF SAFETY GLASS AND THE METHOD OF SAMPLING, THE NUMBER OF TESTS, THE THICKNESS OF THE SAMPLES, TEST TEMPERATURE, HEIGHT OF DROP, NATURE OF DAMAGE AND IF NECESSARY THE WEIGHT OF FRAGMENTS DETACHED IN THE DIRECTION OF IMPACT AND THE WEIGHT OF THE LARGEST SPLINTER IN GRAMMES TO THE NEAREST 0.1 G.
