DETERMINATION OF THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF PAINT FILMS TO DETERIORATION

THE QUALITY OF A SERIES OF OIL AND EMULSION BASE PAINTS OBTAINED FROM OUTDOOR EXPOSURE TESTS WAS CORRELATED WITH LABORATORY DATA DERIVED FROM STRESS-STRAIN AND CREEP MEASUREMENTS OF FILMS PREPARED FROM THESE PAINTS. THE RATE OF DETERIORATION OF PAINT FILMS IN OZONE, EXPRESSED IN TERMS OF WORK-TO-FAILURE WAS IN RELATIVELY GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PAINTS. EXPERIMENTAL DATA WERE FITTED INTO A SIMPLIFIED DIFFUSION-BASED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MEASURED MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND THE TIME OF EXPOSURE OF PAINT FILMS TO OZONE. THIS RELATIONSHIP PROVIDED STRAIGHT LINES WHOSE SLOPES REFLECTED THE QUALITY RATINGS OF THE PAINTS. THE SUITABILITY OF A TIME-TO-FAILURE LOAD-RELATIONSHIPS OF OZONE-EXPOSED PAINTS AS A CRITERION OF PAINT PERFORMANCE IS CURRENTLY BEING INVESTIGATED. /AUTHOR/
