USE OF NEW STEELS IN STORAGE TANKS
A NEW STORAGE TANK DESIGN IS SUGGESTED USING FOUR NEW TYPES OF STEEL' /1/ STRUCTURAL CARBON, /2/ HIGH-STRENGTH LOW-ALLOY, /3/ HEAT-CREATED CARBON, AND /4/ HEAT-TREATED CONSTRUCTION ALLOY. IF THE TANK IS DESIGNED AND FABRICATED OF A COMBINATION OF THESE STEELS, WITH EACH SERIES OF SHELL COURSES FROM TOP TO BOTTOM HAVING AN INCREASING STRENGTH LEVEL, IT WOULD THEN HAVE A THINNER, LIGHTER-WEIGHT SHELL OF MORE UNIFORM THICKNESS. IN ADITION TO LOWER SHELL MATERIAL COST, THE REDUCED SHELL THICKNESS WOULD RESULT IN REDUCED SHELL WEIGHT THEREBY LOWERING THE COSTS OF FREIGHT, WELDING AND POSSIBLY FABRICATION. THE SELECTION OF HIGHER-STRENGTH STEELS FOR STORAGE TANKS AND EFFECTIVE UTILIZATION OF THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS ARE TWO IMPORTANT DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS. NOTCH TOUGHNESS OF THE STEEL IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION DEPENDING ON AMBIENT TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS AT THE TANK LOCATION.
