PULSED ARC WELDING OF THICK QT.35 PLATE
THE USE OF PULSED ARC WELDING HAS BEEN SHOWN TO GIVE A SATISFACTORY WELD QUALITY ON A SIDE BEND TEST CRITERION FOR THE WELDING OF THICK QT.35 PLATE IN THE VERTICAL AND OVERHEAD POSITIONS, THOUGH A SPECIAL WELDING TECHNIQUE WAS NECESSARY. A FILLER WIRE OF A SIMILAR COMPOSITION TO THE PLATE AND ARGON' OXYGEN SHIELDING WERE USED, AND WELD METAL STRENGTH AND IMPACT PROPERTIES HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO MATCH THOSE OF THE WROUGHT PLATE. HEAT-AFFECTED ZONE THERMAL CYCLES HAVE BEEN MEASURED AND COMPARED WITH THOSE FROM WELDS MADE WITH SHORT CIRCUITING SPRAY-TYPE ARCS, AND EXAMINATION OF THE MICROSTRUCTURES REVEALED NO ADVERSE METALLURGICAL FEATURES.
