DETERMINATION OF CRITICAL OVERTURNING LOADS ON SLENDER REINFORCED AND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE GIRDERS, TAKING ACCOUNT OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE MATERIAL

THE PROGRESS IN CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES HAS LED TO THE PRODUCTION OF REINFORCED OR PRESTRESSED GIRDER ELEMENTS WHICH ARE MORE SLENDER THAN HITHERTO. SPECIAL STABILITY TESTS ARE UNNECESSARY, SINCE THE SMALLER CROSS SECTIONS ARE SAFE DUE TO THE LOWER STRESSES PERMITTED. HOWEVER, IF SLENDER GIRDERS ARE USED IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION, THE DETERMINATION OF CRITICAL OVERTURNING LOADS IS INDISPENSABLE IN ORDER TO DESIGN ADEQUATELY SAFE CROSS SECTIONS. SUITABLE CALCULATION METHODS ARE NOT AVAILABLE YET, ESPECIALLY IN VIEW OF THE FACT THAT THE USUAL ASSUMPTIONS, HOMOGENEITY AND ELASTICITY, ARE OFTEN NOT PERTINENT, LEADING TO CALCULATED SAFETY FACTORS WHICH ARE HIGHER THAN THE ONES EXPECTED IN REALITY. SO FAR INVESTIGATIONS HAVE NOT TAKEN ACCOUNT OF THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO LINEAR RELATION BETWEEN CONCRETE STRESS AND COMPRESSIVE STRAIN. THIS INFLUENCE WOULD DECREASE THE CRITICAL OVERTURNING MOMENT STILL FURTHER. SINCE THIS EFFECT IS OF SPECIAL IMPORTANCE FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM SPANS, OFTEN USED IN CONVENTIONAL BUILDINGS, THESE INVESTIGATIONS ARE AN ATTEMPT AT CLOSING THE GAP BY ARRIVING AT MORE RELIABLE ASSUMPTIONS ON WHICH THE CALCULATIONS COULD BE BASED.
