THE INLFUENCE OF WELD DEFECTS ON THE FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF WELDED CONSTRUCTION

WELD DEFECTS GIVE RISE TO BOTH TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC PROBLEMS. WITH MODERN TESTING TECHNIQUES THE TYPE AND LOCATION OF SUCH DEFECTS CAN BE DEFINED. SYSTEMATICALLY COMPILED CATALOGUES OF SUCH DEFECTS ARE AVAILABLE. THE EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF SUCH FAULTS WHEN RELATED TO THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF WELDED JOINTS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT LOAD AND SAFETY FACTORS AND THE ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS INVOLVED, CAN ONLY BE ASCERTAINED BY ACTUAL TESTING OPERATIONS. THIS IN TURN MEANS THAT ONLY A SUBJECTIVE EVALUATION CAN BE MADE. IN VIEW OF THIS, AN ATTEMPT HAS BEEN MADE TO LAY DOWN STANDARD VALUES IN RESPECT TO REDUCTIONS IN FATIGUE STRENGTH CAUSED BY SUCH DEFECTS, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE VARIOUS INFLUENCING FACTORS INVOLVED. THE PRIMARY AIM IS TO PROVIDE DESIGNERS AND INSPECTION AUTHORITIES WITH A BASIS FOR EVALUATING SUCH DEFECTS. /AUTHOR/
