TESTS TO ESTABLISH THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS INTERIM COATINGS ON THE CONTACT SURFACES OF RIVETTED JOINTS OF STEEL 52 AND 37

DURABILITY TESTS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT TO SEE WHETHER RIVETTED JOINTS WHICH HAVE THEIR CONTACT SURFACES PROVIDED WITH FINISHING COATINGS ARE SUFFICIENTLY DURABLE. THE TESTS ARE BEING CARRIED OUT FIRST OF ALL WITH STEEL NUMBER 52. THE FOLLOWING SAMPLES OF STEEL 52 WERE PRODUCED AND TESTED: COATED WITH TWO APPLICATIONS OF ZINC DUST COLOUR; COATED WITH ZINC CHROMATE PRIMER 20-25 U; UNCOATED. IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT THE UNCOATED SAMPLES CAN SUPPORT FEWER ALTERNATE LOADS THAN THOSE COATED WITH ZINC DUST COLOUR. ON THE OTHER HAND SAMPLES COATED WITH IRON OXIDE RED ZINC CHROMATE WERE INFERIOR TO THE UNCOATED SAMPLES.
