NEW FORMS OF ELECTRIC MOTOR
REAPPRAISAL OF THE USEFULNESS OF ELECTRIC MOTORS LED TO THE REEXAMINATION OF PAST INVENTIONS IN THE FIELD WHICH, BECAUSE OF LACK OF EFFICIENCY OR HIGH COST, WERE NOT PRACTICAL WHEN THEY FIRST APPEARED. NEW TYPES OF SOLID STATE DEVICES, SUCH AS THE SILICON CONTROLLED RECTIFIER, THE THYRISTOR, ARE IMPROVING THE VARIABLE SPEED MOTORS AND MAKING THE DIRECT CURRENT MACHINE VERY POPULAR. EXPERIMENTS WITH INDUCTION MOTORS, THE IDEA OF POLE AMPLITUDE MODIFICATION HAS EXTENDED THE NUMBER OF SPEEDS AVAILABLE FROM A SINGLE VARIABLE SPEED MOTOR. SPHERICAL MOTORS ARE USED TO TRY TO CONTROL THE MAGNETIC CURRENT LOSSES. AT THE MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY, EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE TO DEVELOP THE LINEAR INDUCTION MOTOR AS A HIGH SPEED TRACTION UNIT, SUITABLE FOR USE BY THE RAILROADS, WITH POSSIBLE APPLICATION TO MONORAIL AND AIR-RIDING VEHICLES. THE BASIS FOR MANY OF THE EXPERIMENTS IS A FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT APPROACH TO THE DESIGN POLE ROTORS AND THE TOPOLOGICAL LAYOUT OF THE WINDINGS.
