REPORT ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD LENGTH IN WUPPERTAL, SYNTHETIC IRON-OXIDE PIGMENTS AND GREEN CHROMIUM OXIDE IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

SIGNS BY THE ROADSIDE, ESPECIALLY WHEN PRESENT IN LARGE MEMBERS, ARE NO LONGER ADEQUATE AS A MEANS OF CONTROLLING TRAFFIC. COLORED TRAFFIC LANES OR COLORED TRAFFIC LINES COULD GUIDE TRAFFIC EFFECTIVELY AT CROSSINGS. TESTS ARE REPORTED WITH PIGMENTED CONCRETES OF VARIOUS COMPOSITION, IN REGARD TO ENDURANCE, COLOR FASTNESS AND COST. AT ONE CONCRETE PLANT, SLABS 1 X 1 M SQUARE WERE MADE WITH A 7-CM THICK WEARING FACE OF B450 (CONCRETE GRADE) AND 15 CM UNDERCOATING, LAID ON A FOUNDATION OF 24 CM FROST BLANKET, 12 CM BITUMINOUS MINERAL MIX, A 2 CM LINE MORTAR; IN 4 SERIES OF 6 SLABS EACH, 4 WITH RED IRON OXIDE, 4 WITH YELLOW IRON OXIDE, 4 WITH GREEN CHROMIUM OXIDE AND 4 WITHOUT PIGMENTATION. CEMENT CONTENT 330 KG/M CUBED, COMPLETELY MIXED WITH PORTLAND CEMENT 275, AND FOR THE YELLOW SLABS, WHITE CEMENT. ADDITIVES FOR WEARING COAT: GRAVEL 0/30 OR 0/15, 75% DIABASE CHIPS & 25% LIMESTONE CHIPS 0/30 OR 0/15 MM. PIGMENT ADDITION 5% WEIGHT. 28 DAY STRENGTH VALUES ATTAINED UP TO AND OVER 500 KP/CM SQUARED. RED IRON OXIDE BEHAVED BEST UNDER MOST KINDS OF LIGHTING, YELLOW IRON OXIDE WAS BEST UNDER SODIUM VAPOUR LIGHT. WEAR RESISTANCE WAS INVESTIGATED BY TAKING SILICONE RUBBER PRINTS AT REGULAR INTERVALS, IN POINTS MARKED WITH BRASS PINS. /FG/RRL/
