METHODS FOR BRIGHTENING ROAD SURFACES, AND THEIR PROFITABILITY
BRIGHT ROAD SURFACES ARE SAFER THAN DARK ONES. A SUITABLE MATERIAL /WHITE CHIPPINGS WHICH ARE ABRASION-PROOF/ IS AVAILABLE AT A COMPETITIVE PRICE. THERE ARE TWO TYPES' GRENETTE, FINELY GRADED, FOR SURFACE APPLICATION, GRANUSIL FOR BITUMINOUS CONCRETE. SYNTHETIC MATERIALS ARE ALSO PRODUCED IN DENMARK AND ITALY. THE FOLLOWING THREE METHODS ARE USED FOR BRIGHTENING ROAD SURFACES' /1/ THE CARRIAGEWAY IS SURFACE-DRESSED WITH CHIPPINGS COATED WITH EPOXY RESIN, OR THE EPOXY RESIN IS APPLIED FIRST AND THE WHITE CHIPPINGS AFTERWARDS. /2/ WHITE CHIPPINGS ARE SPREAD OVER THE NEWLY LAID BITUMINOUS SURFACING AND INCORPORATED BY COMPACTION. /3/ THE METHOD CONSIDERED THE MOST PROMISING BY THE AUTHOR, THAT IS A BITUMINOUS MIXTURE INCORPORATING A CERTAIN PROPORTION OF WHITE BURNT FLINT /GRANUSIL/ IS LAID AS A 20 TO 30-MM THICK SURFACE CARPET. AT THE START, THE ROAD SURFACE IS BLACK, BUT AFTER TWO TO THREE MONTHS, THE BLACK BITUMEN OF THE SURFACE LAYER IS REMOVED BY THE TYRES, AND THE ROAD SURFACE BECOMES BRIGHT. THE RESULTS OF A SERIES OF TESTS IN FRANCE AND ABROAD INDICATE THAT A SUITABLE METHOD FOR BRIGHTENING ROAD SURFACES HAS BEEN FOUND. THE ANALYSIS OF THE COST OF THE METHOD SHOWS THAT IT CAN BE USED COMMERCIALLY.
