FULL-DEPTH ASPHALT PAVING CAN SAVE CONSTRUCTION TIME
A DESCRITION IS GIVEN OF THE PROCEDURES AND STEPS IN THE FULL-DEPTH REPAVING OF HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD IN LOS ANGELES. THE PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN IN COOPERATION WITH LOCAL BUSINESSMEN SO AS TO CAUSE THE LEAST POSSIBLE INTERFERENCE WITH TRAFFIC FLOW. THE REPAVING ENTAILED EXCAVATING A 12-INCH TRENCH OF THE OLD ASPHALT SURFACE AND AGGRGATE BASE, THE WORK PROGRESSING A BLOCK AT A TIME. THE BASE COURSE WAS PLACED IN A SINGLE LIFT WITH A JERSEY SPREADER, AND THEN A 2-INCH COMPACTED COURSE OF AC SURFACING WAS PLACED. THE FOLLOWING ADVANTAGES OF A THICK, SINGLE LIFT OF AC BASE WERE FOUND: (1) THERE IS GREATER COMPACTION FROM ROLLING, BECAUSE HEAT IS RETAINED LONGER; (2) MAKING A SINGLE PASS SAVES TIME; (3) ELIMINATING THE CRUSHED AGGREGATE BASE SAVES THE TIME OF SPREADING AND LEVELING; AND (4) A THINNER REPAIR SECTION REDUCES CONFLICT WITH SHALLOW UTILITY SERVICES.
