KNOWLEDGE OF THE HARDNESS OF THE STONE OFFERS ONE MUCH BETTER POSSIBILITY OF BEING ABLE TO JUDGE IN ADVANCE THE VALUE OF SURFACE WEAR DEPENDENT UPON THE TYPES OF STONE USED IN THE MIX. IT MUST, HOWEVER, BE NOTED IN RELATION TO THESE CONCLUSIONS THAT THE CORRELATION STATED HERE IS APPLICABLE ONLY TO THOSE LENGTHS OF HIGHWAY SUCH AS URBAN ROADS AND HEAVILY CURVED STRETCHES WHERE THE CARRIAGEWAY SURFACE UNDERGOES A SCRAPING ACTION SIMILAR TO THAT RECEIVED BY THE SAMPLE IN THE PEINER FRICTION MEASURE TEST. HOW FAR THE HARDNESS OF THE STONE MAY BE CONSIDERED AS A GUIDE TO WEAR OF THOSE ROADS, SUCH AS MOTORWAYS AND TRUNK ROADS, WHICH ARE SUBJECT TO IMPACT STRESS IS A MATTER FOR CLARIFICATION AND TO THIS END A SIMILAR SERIES OF TESTS WITH ABRASION MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE UNDERTAKEN ON SAMPLES SUBJECT TO PREDOMINANTLY IMPACT STRESSING.
