QUALITY CONTROL OF CONCRETE VIBRATION OF CONCRETE RELATED TO SLIPFORM PAVING
FLIP-FORM PAVERS THAT EXTRUDE PAVEMENT AT A RATE UP TO 15 FT/MIN REQUIRE A COMPATIBLE VIBRATION SYSTEM. ALTHOUGH CONSIDERABLE RESEARCH ON CONCRETE VIBRATION HAS RESULTED IN FAIRLY GOOD DEFINITION OF BASIC PRINCIPLES, PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN THE FIELD INDICATE A NEED FOR SLIP-FORM VIBRATION CRITERIA. IN ADDITION, SEVERAL QUESTIONS HAVE NOT BEEN ANSWERED BY RESEARCH REPORTED TO DATE, E.G., (1) IS VIBRATION ONLY FOR CONSOLIDATION OR ALSO FOR LIQUEFACTION OF CONCRETE AS AN AID TO SHAPING? (2) IS A SLOPED OR HORIZONTAL VIBRATOR POSITION PREFERABLE TO A VERTICAL ONE, AND HOW NEAR SHOULD THE VIBRATOR BE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SLAB? (3) TO WHAT EXTENT DO MIX COMPOSITION, SLUMP, TYPE OF COARSE AGGREGATE, SLAB THICKNESS, USE OF REINFORCEMENT, ETC., DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF VIBRATION REQUIRED? (4) WHAT FIELD TEST CAN BE USED TO DETERMINE THE ADEQUACY OF VIBRATION? THE DISCUSSION IN THIS PAPER IS CONCERNED WITH A METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VIBRATOR SPACING, PAVING SPEED, AND PAVEMENT THICKNESS. IT IS BASED ON SWEDISH RESEARCH AND ILLUSTRATES SEVERAL FACTORS THAT MUST BE CONSIDERED IN DETERMINING AN OPTIMUM VIBRATION SYSTEM. THE DISCUSSION IS LIMITED TO INTERNAL VIBRATION PRODUCED BY A SPUD, SPADE, STICK, OR POKER VIBRATOR.
