THE EFFECT OF THE USE OF STUDDED TYRES ON THE WEAR OF ROAD SURFACES AND THE DRIVING CHARACTERISTICS OF VEHICLES

THIS BOOKLET FORMS THE THIRD AND FINAL PART OF A DOCUMENTATION OF RESEARCH ON STUDDED TYRES. IT CONTAINS 8 PAPERS, STARTING WITH THE EARLY INVESTIGATIONS OF THE TU BERLIN (K.H. SCHULZE) WHERE FROM TESTS ON A CIRCULAR TRACK PREDICTIONS COULD BE MADE ABOUT THE ANTICIPATED WEAR, TO THE RESEARCHES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KARLSRUHE (KREBS, LAMM, LEUTNER) CONCERNING THE SPEED OF VEHICLES WITH STUDDED TYRES AND THEIR PROPORTION OF TOTAL TRAFFIC IN 1970/72. COMPREHENSIVE RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS OF WEAR CAUSED BY STUDDED TYRES ON FEDERAL HIGHWAYS IN THE FORM OF A CENSUS ARE CONTAINED IN A PAPER BY THE TH DARMSTADT (KLEIN, SUSS) WHICH INVOLVED TAKING LEVELS OF THE ROAD SURFACE IN RELATION TO A FIXED BENCHMARK AT VARIOUS TIMES DURING CONSECUTIVE YEARS (1966/74). A PAPER FROM THE TU MUNICH (K. SCHULZE) EXAMINED THE INFLUENCE OF IMPACT RESISTANCE OF THE AGGREGATE ON PAVEMENT WEAR USING 20 TEST PANELS ON THE EXPERIMENTAL ROAD HOFOLDINGER FORST. A TEST STRETCH ON THE SAME MOTORWAY BY BAST (U. HALFMANN) HAS 9 DIFFERENT TYPES OF PAVEMENT (MAINLY SPECIAL CONSTRUCTIONS) WITH IMPROVED WEAR RESISTANCE, PROVISIONAL RESULTS CONCERNING GRIP AND WEAR ARE PRESENTED. A FURTHER PAPER FROM THE TU MUNICH (K. SCHULZE) CONCERNS THE INFLUENCE OF VEHICLE SPEED ON WEAR AND ALSO GIVES DETAILS OF THE COMPOSITION OF THE ABRADED MATERIAL. THEN FOLLOWS A REPORT FROM BAST (HIERSCHE, SCHMITZ) WHICH DEALS WITH THE VARIATIONS OF GRIP OVER THE CROSS-SECTION FOLLOWING THE USE OF STUDDED TYRES. FINALLY A PAPER FROM THE TU BERLIN (J. DAMES, K.H. SCHULZE) GIVES COMPARATIVE DATA CONCERNING THE ADHESION OF A WINTER TYRE WITH STUDS ON WET PAVEMENTS COMPARED TO A SELECTION OF WINTER TYRES WITHOUT STUDS.
